They took their name from jazz musician Thelonious Monk's 1967 album of the same title. In college, they performed at Wrigley Field and opened for Lou Rawls at Carnegie Hall. After graduating in 1999, the original members went their separate ways and did not pursue music professionally together. However, in 2006, a video of their 1998 performance of “The 12 Days of Christmas” was uploaded to YouTube. The video went viral and attracted the attention of Craig Kallman, CEO of Atlantic Records. Kallman asked the group if they would consider reuniting to record an album. Eight original members, Dan Ponce, Randy Stine, Charlie Mechling, Steve Morgan, Jerome Collins, Dave Roberts, Walter Chase and Mike Itkoff, with two new members, Mike Luginbill and Ryan Ahlwardt, agreed. The group recorded their first album, Holiday Spirits, in 2008. The Christmas album went on to become the No. 1 selling album on iTunes. In 2009, Holiday Spirits won the Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA) award for Best Holiday Album.

Throughout their professional career, they have toured North America, Europe and Australia. They have consistently ranked in Pollstar’s top 100 touring acts in North America. Their 2020-2021 Open Bar Tour takes them throughout the US with stops from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Fresno, California.
