The band came together in 2018, taking their name from the early 2000s Japanese drama film Linda Linda Linda. They gave one of their earliest performances opening for singer-songwriter Kristin Kontrol in Los Angeles, and by the following year had performed alongside a slew of high-profile acts like the Alley Cats, Phranc and Alice Bag.

The Linda Lindas’ songs have been used extensively in film, most notably on the Netflix documentary The Claudia Kishi Club. Their songs were also used in the film Moxie after comedian Amy Poehler saw them perform at the Hollywood Palladium. In 2021 The Linda Lindas became an online viral sensation for their music video for the song “Racist, Sexist Boy,” which earned public praise from groups like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine and Thurston Moore. Later that year the band signed to Epitaph Records, through which they released their debut studio album Growing Up shortly afterward.
