Born in Savannah in 1981 to a musical family, Wainwright learned to play piano and the Hammond organ as a boy. He later studied at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University before working as an air traffic controller at the Memphis International Airport. In 2004 he met Stephen Dees, who encouraged Wainwright’s musical talents and produced his debut album Pianna from Savannah.

Dees and Wainwright then formed the band Victor Wainwright & the WildRoots, earning acclaim for their 2009 album Beale Street to the Bayou. They were listed on Root Music Report’s Top 50 Blues Artists chart, an accomplishment that earned them spots at events like the Dark Season Blues Festival and South Florida Boogie Woogie Piano festival. Wainwright’s reputation continued to grow, and in 2018 his album Victor Wainwright and The Train received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
