He was born Joseph Antonio Cartenega in 1970 from parents of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent. He grew up in the Forest Houses section of the South Bronx. His brother and the heavy hip-hop presence in the Bronx introduced him to rap. He started as Fat Joe Da Gangsta with the group Diggin’ in the Crates Crew (DITC). He signed to Relativity Records and released his debut album, Represent, in 1993. The single “Flow Joe” peaked in the charts. He then released Jealous One’s Envy in 1995 and Don Cartagena in 1998. During this period, he signed Big Pun to his Terror Squad label. Their biggest record together was “Twinz,” which represented the brotherly love between them. After the passing of Pun, Joe continued to honor his legacy and released albums like Jealous One’s Still Envy, Loyalty and All or Nothing just to name a few.
