He was born on August 17, 1962, near Cleveland, Ohio, and later relocated to Los Angeles where he fell into the local music scene playing with such obscure outfits as Candy and Kill For Thrills.

After being let go by singer Axl Rose, Clarke automatically launched a solo career and released his debut album, Pawnshop Guitars, which had the rock radio hit single "Cure Me...or Kill Me" in 1994. It also featured "Dead Flowers," which has over a million and a half streams on Spotify, along with "Tijuana Jail." Since then he has put out a steady amount of albums including The Gospel Truth, in 2021. In addition, he has also produced for such bands as Beat Angels and L.A. Guns.
