The Golden Gloves was initially conceived by Ach Ward of the Chicago Tribune in 1923, who envisioned a citywide tournament for Chicago. The Tribune became a sponsor in 1927.  A tournament was soon held between Chicago and New York with other cities beginning to join. A national tournament was eventually established in 1962.
