The Goo Goo Dolls first began their journey to superstardom in 1986 as a garage band from Buffalo, New York with little interest in mainstream recognition.

Founding members Johnny Rzeznik, Robby Takac and George Tutuska played Buffalo’s underground circuit for about a year when they recorded their first album titled “Goo Goo Dolls” in 1987. The band recorded two more albums, “Jed” and “Hold Me Up,” between 1989 and 1990, which achieved local success. However, it wasn’t until the band recorded their single ‘I’m Awake Now’ for the “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare” soundtrack in 1991 that the band began to get national attention and sales of Goo Goo Dolls tickets began to heat up.

The band continued to see marginal success until 1997 when they released their hit single ‘Iris,’ which was featured on the “City of Angels” soundtrack and spent 18 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts. That same year the band was nominated for three Grammys.

From the late 1990s well until the present, Goo Goo Dolls has been a household name in rock music. The band has gone on to win four Billboard Awards, three Radio Music Awards and a host of other major accolades, making the Goo Goo Dolls one of the most popular bands of their era.
