The band was formed by Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead vocalist and guitarist, and Mike Dirnt, the band's bassist and backing vocalist. For most of the band's existence, Armstrong and Dirnt have been a trio with drummer Tre’ Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990. Jason White is a touring guitarist for the group. In 2010, a stage adaptation of their American Idiot debuted on Broadway and won two Tony Awards out of the three it was nominated for. In 2015, Green Day became eligible for and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The iconic punk outfit announced in 2023 that their new album, Saviors, would debut in 2024 and be accompanied by a large, self-titled US tour that summer.
