As a teen, John Moreland played for multiple punk and hardcore bands, including Thirty Called Arson.

In 2005, he created the Black Gold Band. Their first album, Endless Oklahoma Sky, debuted in 2008. John Moreland wrote many songs in quick succession and his Oklahoma roots primarily influenced his music. In addition, he drew inspiration from other famous artists, including Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. The largely self-produced singer and songwriter debuted his second album, Things I Can't Control, in 2009.

The success of his music career garnished a greater demand for John Moreland tickets. In 2011, he debuted Everything the Hard Way with the Dust Bowl Souls band. His third solo album, High on Tulsa Heat, was released in 2015 and was swiftly well-received by fans and critics alike. The record featured several notable artists, including Jared Tyler, Chris Foster, Kierston White, John Calvin Abney and Jesse Aycock. Additionally, John Moreland began participating in the Kansas non-profit folk music conference, Folk Alliance.

John Moreland's seventh album, Big Bad Luv, debuted in 2017 and was the first record that included a full band. The album featured vocals from musicians Griffin Goldsmith, Taylor Goldsmith, Michael Trent and Carrie Ann Hearst. His fifth solo album, LP5, debuted in 2020.
