New Edition broke up in the early 1990s and Gill struck out on his own, releasing hits like "My, My, My" and "Rub You the Right Way." He became a pioneer in the new jack swing movement as “My, My, My” reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won the Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Single.

Gill has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. The first was with New Edition, which saw “If It Isn’t Love” nominated for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The second was during his solo career. Gill was nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1991.
