Emerging in 1966, Leo Kottke is a renowned acoustic guitarist best known for his unique and unconventional picking style. His career as a musician began with his regular performances at the Scholar Coffeehouse in Minneapolis.
Leo Kottke's debut album, 12-String Blues, was released in 1969. He released the acclaimed 6- and 12-String Guitar album, also known as the "Armadillo album," the same year. The album has been re-released several times over the years and, to this day, remains one of Leo's most famous and esteemed works.
Leo Kottke tickets became more popular as Leo furthered his success by signing on with Capitol Records in 1971. That same year, he released his first major-label album, Mudlark. Leo Kottke released several more albums in the 1970s, including Greenhouse, My Feet Are Smiling, Ice Water, Chewing Pine and Eponymous. At this point, Leo began to gain an international following and signed on with Chrysalis Records.
Leo Kottke took a brief break from his work in 1986 after releasing A Shout Toward Noon before returning in 1988. Following his return, Leo released albums annually from 1989 to 1991. These releases included My Father's Face, That's What and Great Big Boy. Great Big Boy became increasingly popular, in part thanks to featured appearances by Margo Timmins and Lyle Lovett.
In 2002, Leo collaborated with Mike Gordon for the album Clone, which featured works from both musicians. They produced a second album together, Sixty Six Steps, in 2005, before touring together. Their third collaborative album, Noon, was released in 2020.
