The band was founded by Luke Miller at Goshen College in 1998 who had a vision of playing a style of music they call “jamtronica,” a fusion of blues-rock with electronic elements. Lotus was heavily influenced by the electronic band The Orb, to whom they are often compared. 

In 2001 Lotus released their first album Vibes, which was a compilation of live performances from their first tour. The album got the attention of Harmonized Records, which they signed in 2002. Lotus released their follow-up album Nomad through the label, which reached the top of the Home Grown Music Network charts to become the Network’s bestseller. Lotus would earn a nomination for that year’s Jammy Award for New Groove of the Year.
