Her career began when producer Ed Mirvish recruited Johnson to perform at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Porgy and Bess, South Pacific and Finian’s Rainbow. By the time she was a teenager, Johnson had become the frontwoman for the disco band A Chocolate Affair. She sang lead vocals in two rock bands, Alta Moda and Infidels, which released multiple hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She then played with several small jazz bands as an adult before releasing her first solo album in 2000 to much critical acclaim. 

Johnson made history as the first female singer to sell out a show at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival. Her growing reputation saw her perform for notable figures like Princess Diana, Quincy Jones and Nelson Mandela.
