The original production turned out to be an immediate sensation. Quickly, performances popped up all over the U.S., eventually making its debut in NYC at the Henry Miller’s Theatre in 1938. The theatrical production was instantly applauded by critics, earning Wilder the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Another famous revival was performed in 1989 at New York City’s Lincoln Center. Aside from having a number of decent revivals, several adaptations have been made. A 1940 film of the same name was screened, starring Martha Scott as Emily and William Holden as George Gibbs.
