Abigail Williams’ uniquely symphonic style saw them embark on a series of tours alongside high-profile metal groups like Enslaved and Dark Funeral, and despite a brief hiatus reunited to record their debut studio album In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns in 2008. The album further refined their sound, adding several melodic elements normally foreign to the black metal genre.
The band takes its name from the historical figure Abigail Williams, one of the first persons in America to accuse her neighbor of practicing witchcraft. The band chose the name in recognition of America’s sometimes troubled history, and their songs show an appreciation for the American mythos similar to Scandinavian metal groups’ veneration of their own Norse culture.
