The event was held irregularly through the 1950s before being discontinued. An Eastern Conference versus Western Conference format was utilized between 2011 and 2015.

Beginning in 2016, the format was revamped from a single game to a six-game, 3-on-3 round-robin tournament between teams representing the Atlantic, Central, Pacific, and North divisions of the league. The top two division teams after the round-robin then compete in a six-minute game to determine a champion of the AHL All-Star Classic. Each division’s team features a roster made up of 12 players who are selected by the AHL coaches committee. All six of the round-robin games and the championship game will be played in a single day, with the AHL All-Star Skills Competition taking place the day before.
