Alastair was born in Clackmannan on May 14, 1955, and began taking classical violin lessons at the age of 8. In his teens, Alistair played with dance bands across Scotland where he learned how to build an extraordinary repertoire by listening closely to both written music from great fiddling forebears like Niel or Nathaniel Marshall as well improvisation styles that were influential among Gaels - especially those who spoke Doric dialects of Northern English which include players such as James Scott Skinner.

As a fiddler equally capable of playing haunting Gaelic airs and rumbustious dance tunes, Alasdair has thrived in his many successful partnerships with other musicians. These include duets for example on piano by Paul Machlis or guitar alongside Tony McManus.
