The four members of the band, lead singer Zac Barnett, guitarist/banjoist James Adam Shelley, bassist Dave Rublin and drummer Matt Sanchez, met in 2006 at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Originally named “The Blue Pages,” the group changed its name to “American Authors,” as a nod to the different corners of America they come from and that their songs originate from the stories in their lives. The group has toured all over the world, from North America to New Zealand and played many notable festivals, including Lollapalooza and Firefly Music Festival, among others.

Their genre has been described as alt-rock but they pride themselves on musical experimentation. Concert-goers who have bought American Authors tickets over the span of the group’s career will know that the iconic banjo solo at the beginning of “Best Day of My Life” came about because James Adam Shelley wanted to let go and experiment with a new instrument. The group liked it so much that over 90% of the “Oh, What a Life” album features banjo.

The band toured its “Band of Brothers Roadshow” with Magic Giant in early 2020.
