Cassandra Batie, who uses the stage name Andra Day, is an American singer-songwriter who garnered a great deal of attention when she recorded 'Stand Up for Something' with rap star Common for 'Marshall', a 2017 biographic film about Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American to serve on the Supreme Court in the United States. The single, co-written by Common and veteran songwriter Diane Warren reached number 15 on Billboard's Adult R&B Chart and was nominated for Grammy and Academy Awards.
Born in Spokane, Washington Day grew up in San Diego, California where she sang in church as a child and later graduated from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. She gained exposure with covers and mash-ups on her YouTube channel and made her album debut in 2015 with 'Cheers to the Fall' which went to number three on Billboard's Top R&B Chart.
The single 'Rise Up' went to number six on the Adult R&B Song Chart and 'Gold' reached number 13. The EP 'Merry Christmas from Andra Day' peaked at number 16 in 2016 and the single 'Someday at Christmas' with Stevie Wonder peaked at number two on Billboard's Holiday Digital Song Sales Chart.
