Andrew Lawson was a twenty-seven-year-old boy from Norwell, Mass., that had Down Syndrome and passed away from cancer. He attended Norwell Public School where he was both involved in academics and sports. Through the support of the athletic director, coaches, and teammates, he was a three-sport athlete in high school. Through the success of Lawson’s career, he received the Heroes Among Us award from the Boston Celtics. After high school graduation, he returned to be the assistant coach of both soccer and basketball boys varsity teams. He also had the honor of being inducted into the Norwell High School Athletic Hall of Fame as an athlete and a coach. Lawson was also inducted into the Special Olympics Massachusetts Hall of Fame. He made an impact on all those around him in his life.
The mission of the Andrew Lawson Foundation and the Andrew Lawson Invitational basketball tournament is to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The TD Garden Invitational includes high school basketball teams from across the state of Massachusetts. Some of these teams are Hingham, Weymouth, Malden Catholic, and Cardinal Spellman.
