The event invites locals to enter the prison grounds, where various attractions and concession stands are set up. The main event features prison inmates competing in a variety of rodeo acts for cash prizes. Proceeds from the Angola Prison Rodeo go toward religious education services for prisoners.

In addition to the rodeo sports themselves, inmates from Angola participate in staffing the event. Prisoners sell food and drink at the various concession stands, and sell their handmade artwork at the event’s Arts and Crafts Festival. The food sold at the rodeo is often based on the inmates’ family recipes.

Marketed as “the wildest show in the South,” the Angola Prison Rodeo features a handful of rodeo acts not normally found in more traditional rodeos. One of the show’s most highly anticipated acts is “convict poker,” in which inmates sit around a poker table and resist the urge to move when a raging bull is released into the arena.
