Originally the frontman of the rock-oriented jam-band Strangefolk, he departed from the group in 2000 and proceeded to briefly explore a solo career, releasing his own solo album titled Assembly of Dust. However, after he enjoyed working with the bandmates which he used as his supporting cast in the album, Genauer ended up deciding to keep their partnership permanent, using the album name for their new group and thus officially founding Assembly of Dust.

With Genauer leading the way on vocals and guitar, the rest of the crew consisted of Adam Terrell on lead guitar, John Leccese on bass, Jason Crosby on the keys and violin and Dave Diamond on the drums. Fusing the groovy rhythms of blues and R&B with masterful guitar play that invokes inspiration from greats like J.J. Cale, Little Feat and Steely Dan, it did not take long for Assembly of Dust tickets to start selling like hotcakes up and down the East Coast.

The New York-based quintet would proceed to release five live albums from their acclaimed December 2005 tour, cementing their status as one of the top jam band outfits at the time.
