Born in Los Angeles in 1970, the artist met future Cypress Hill members Mellow Man Ace and Sen Dog while in high school. After graduation, the group began pursuing a music career in earnest, developing their distinctive West Coast sound. By 1991 they had been signed to Ruffhouse/Columbia Records, through which they released their eponymous debut album later that year.
The album was a runaway success, in large part due to its confessional lyrics and Freese’s signature high-pitched rap voice. It would later sell more than two million copies. Cypress Hill cemented their place at the forefront of the hip hop scene with their sophomore album Black Sunday, which became a number one hit on the Billboard 200. They remain the best-selling Latin rap group of all time.
