The band performed their first public show as an opening act for punk rock band Social Distortion in 1980. During this time the band experienced minor breakups from 1981 to 1985. They reformed in 1986 and began working on their third album, Suffer, which was released in 1988 and voted Best Album of the Year by Trust and Maximum Rocknroll. It wasn’t until 1993 that Bad Religion received mainstream acclaim. The re-release of the album Recipe for Hate debuted at number 14 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. The songs “American Jesus” and “Struck a Nerve” were hits on rock radio stations across the United States.

Bad Religion and other punk rock bands like Green Day and The Offspring enjoyed much success in the early 1990s. This launched tours all across the world, including the famous Vans Warped Tour where Bad Religion was an early staple.
