The Barbasol Championship began in 2015 with its timing to coordinate with The British Open. This is known as an alternate match. The first three years of the tournament were played at Opelika, Alabama’s Grand National golf course. It was in 1990 that Alabama last hosted a PGA tournament, which was the PGA Championship.
In 2018, the tournament moved to Kentucky to Champions Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville. It was almost 60 years prior that Kentucky last hosted a regular PGA event. The Barbasol Championship, one of 52 PGA tour events, grants the champion exemption for two years and one of a limited invite to play in the PGA Championship Tournament. Since this event is considered an alternate one, the points earned are lower than normal and there is no automatic qualification to compete in the Masters Tournament. From 2022 and forward, The Barbasol Championship will now be a coordinated alternate competition with the Genesis Scottish Open on the PGA European Tour. Both tournaments will be held on the same week.
