The school was previously called the Beaumont Society School of Ballet when the school was established in1975. The school taught the Cecchetti Method of Ballet until 1994 when the curriculum was changed to the Royal Academy of Dance. Along with ballet, the school teaches tap, jazz and hip hop.

The BSSD, which is a non-profit parent-led organization, has had numerous dancers successfully go on to attend the Edmonton School of Ballet and other national ballet schools, such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada. Other former students of the BSSD have gone on to form their own ballet schools.
