Originally from New York City, Fleck was destined for a career in music at a young age, having been named in part after Hungarian composer Bela Bartok. Fleck received his first banjo at age 15 and attended an arts high school, where he became proficient in his new instrument. After graduating high school, Bela Fleck moved to Boston, where he became a member of the group Tasty Licks. After releasing two albums with the outfit, Fleck released his first solo album Crossing the Tracks in 1979.

Bela Fleck tickets rose in demand when he joined the group, New Grass Revival, in 1981. During his nine-year tenure with the band, Fleck found the time to record a second solo album, Drive, which was nominated for a “Best Bluegrass Album” Grammy Award. In 1988, Fleck, along with legendary bassist Victor Wooten, keyboardist Howard Levy, and percussionist Roy “Futura Man” Wooten formed Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Though the group was just getting started, their second album, Flight of the Cosmic Hippo, reached number one on Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart.

Over the years, Fleck has won an astounding total of 14 Grammy Awards and been nominated for 33. After working with his own groups as well as collaborating with a laundry list of artists across multiple genres, Bela Fleck shows no signs of slowing down.
