Every night when his father got home from work, they would play together, Ben on drums and his dad singing and playing guitar. Learning to play “Heart and Soul” on the keyboard led to him creating his own songs using the same chords.
In 1993, Kweller formed Radish with drummer John Kent, another local musician, and bassist Ryan Green. The band played in Greenville, Texas, recording two independent releases at a recording studio in Dallas. They played on various late-night talk shows, where they gained a cult following, which led to them touring all over the world. In 1999, the band broke up and Kweller moved to New York with his girlfriend, Liz Smith.
