He started the project in 2010 when he became disenfranchised with the logistics of running a group with multiple members.
Alessandro Cortini, member of Nine Inch Nails, showed him how easy it was to create music on a laptop. Bates released the BBDLP1 in 2011 and then released the eponymous debut album, Big Black Delta, in 2013. The album contains both new material and songs previously released on the LP. The sound of the album takes its inspiration from the soundtracks of the science fiction films Bladerunner and Solaris.
