Big Sugar was founded in Toronto in 1988 by Johnson, who had previously enjoyed success in the band's Bourbon Tabernacle Choir and Infidels. The group released their self-titled debut album in 1991 through Hypnotic Records. As a result of several lineup changes in the mid-90s, the band’s sound took a turn toward blues and reggae influences.
Through the rest of the decade, Big Sugar achieved a significant following in Canada through runaway successes like Five Hundred Pounds and Hemi-Vision. Despite a brief hiatus beginning in 2002, the band reunited in 2010 to release Revolution Per Minute, which contained their well-known hit “Roads Ahead.”
