Born in Santa Monica in 1986, Mills showed a talent for music at a young age. While still in high school he founded the band, Simon Dawes, with friend and fellow musician Taylor Goldsmith. The duo released the EP What No One Hears and album Carnivore in 2005 and 2006 respectively, before disbanding the following year. Mills then formed the similarly-named band Dawes with Wylie Gelber, and the pair found success touring with the likes of Julian Casablancas and Band of Horses.
In 2010 Mills released his debut solo album Break Mirrors, primarily intending for the release to serve as a way of getting work as a session musician. Break Mirrors went viral online however and was listed as Album of the Year by several online publications. He has since found significant success as both a songwriter and producer.
