The play was first staged in the West End in 1941, breaking the previous long-run record for non-musical British plays of 1,997 performances. It was also a major hit on Broadway playing for 657 performances. In 1945, Coward remade the show for the film adaptation starring Rex Harrison. In 1964, Coward also directed a musical adaptation, High Spirits, on Broadway. The title is taken from Shelley's poem "To a Skylark," which begins, "Hail to thee, blithe Spirit! / Bird thou never wert").
