The club was created by British brothers who happened to be business owners on August 1, 1903. The club is one of the oldest sport clubs in the country and competes in the Primeira Liga, the top level of football in the Portuguese football hierarchy.

The original name for the club was the Boavista Footballers. The team’s first rival was Oporto Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club. The current name was adopted in 1910. The team won the Porto Football Association championship. The team adopted its current team colors for its kits in 1933, its black and white checkerboard pattern inspiring one of their nicknames, os Axadrezedos, or “the Checkered Ones.”
