Born in Derry in 1979, James first found an interest in performance after participating in school plays and musicals. He would later study voice at the University of North Carolina.
During his time in college, the young singer learned to play the piano. After his graduation, he moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of a professional career in music, and in 2005 released the demo that would earn him his first deal from a major record label. He was soon signed to Capitol Records, releasing his debut album The Day Is Brave in 2008. The Day Is Brave made the top ten on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and earned rave reviews from publications such as Entertainment Weekly and Newsweek.
In the years that followed, James toured in support of artists such as John Legend, Susan Tedeschi and Corinne Bailey Rae. The artist would again make waves in 2013 with the release of his album Simplify, which showcased songs written in the style of Paul Simon and Bob Dylan.
