She got her first guitar at age 17 and learned to play from VHS tape lessons before beginning to study songwriting in her college years and writing her own.
Canty moved to New York City after attending Williams College in Massachusetts and began working for the music television program Live from the Artists Den. She began recording her own material in her makeshift home studio, making way for her debut EP Green in 2007. She began collaborating with members of the indie-folk group Darlingside, who co-produced the singer’s 2010 EP Neon Streets as well as performed on her 2012 debut full-length album Golden Hour. Her second album, Reckless Skyline, was met with critical acclaim and praised for its haunting and distinct tone that captures the heart of American music on songs like “Get Up”. She has continued to expand her ever-growing fanbase with Motel Bouquet (2018) and its lead single “Motel”, which has garnered more than four million streams on Spotify alone.
