Getting their start in the early 1980s, Camper Van Beethoven has proven to be a critical inspiration to the alternative and indie rock music that we enjoy today. 

Bored by the increasingly repetitive styles which plagued the rock music scene at the time, CVB decided to go a more bold direction with their music, fusing elements of punk, folk, and world music. The final product would be something that they would call “surrealist absurdist folk,” and it would prove to be a massive hit as Camper Van Beethoven tickets would become a must-have for rock fans of all persuasions. The band hit the ground running from the moment they formed in 1983, releasing their first three records in an 18-month stretch. From there the group would grab the attention of Virgin Records, signing with the label in 1987.

Soon after, they released two more albums while producing a number one hit on Billboard Magazine's Modern Rock Tracks with their 1989 cover of Status Quo's "Pictures of Matchstick Men." Despite their rapid rise to prominence, CVB would soon take a hiatus, breaking up in 1990. However, the group came roaring back in 1999, releasing their album, Camper Van Beethoven Is Dead. Long Live Camper Van Beethoven, the following year. Although they have since released multiple more studio and live albums such as New Roman Times and La Costa Perdida, CVB has focused more on touring as well as supporting other up-and-coming indie-rock outfits, hoping to continue inspiring a new generation of musicians and artists.
