The band formed in 1984 when members Leif Edling, Johan Langqvist and Mats Bjorkman came together with a vision of playing a slower and heavier style of metal music in the vein of influences like Judas Priest, Motorhead and Black Sabbath.
Candlemass released their debut album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus in 1986, which was met with widespread acclaim and proved a landmark album in the then-nascent doom metal scene. Despite a number of lineup changes in the late 80s and early 90s, Candlemass released their hit album From the 13th Sun in 1999 and set off on a series of celebrated live tours across the UK and Europe.
After a brief hiatus in the early 2000s, Candlemass reunited in 2004 to release their eponymous album, for which they would win the following year’s Swedish Grammy Award. In 2013 Candlemass was listed by Sweden Rock magazine as the greatest Swedish hard rock/heavy metal band of all time.
