The pop-punk band from Conyers, Ga., formed in 2003 and hit the scene the following year with their debut EP, The Ransom (2004), released on the independent label, The Militia Group, and featured tracks like “The City Never Sleeps.” In 2005, Cartel released their debut studio album, Chroma. The record landed on the Billboard 200 chart, and the band performed its single, “Honestly,” on MTV’s Total Request Live. Two years later, Cartel signed with Epic Records, releasing a self-titled project co-produced by Wyclef Jean, Zack Odom and others. The project debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the single “Lose It” featuring Juliet Simms of the band Automatic Loveletter.
Touring members have included musicians like Will Pugh (vocals, bass), Joseph Pepper (lead vocalist), Nic Hudson (guitar) and Kevin Sanders (drums). In 2013, Cartel self-released the album Collider, prompting the Alternative Press to list the track “Uninspired” as one of the best songs on their mid-year report. After taking a hiatus, the band returned in 2022 with the single “17.” In 2024, Cartel hit the road with Hawthorne Heights and continues to perform shows at venues nationwide.
