Born in Burr Ridge in 1969, Richardson fell in love with music listening to her family’s classic rock albums. She began her music career in 1990 when she was introduced to Survivor founder Jim Peterik. Peterik helped Richardson release her first two albums Moon, Not Banana and Fools on a Tandem in 1993 and 1995, respectively.

In 1999 the Cathy Richardson Band was voted Best Local Band by the Chicago Tribune, and Best in Chicago by WFLD the following year. In 2001 Richardson portrayed Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway production of Love, Janis, going on to sing Joplin’s parts with Big Brother and the Holding Company in the years that followed. In 2004 the Cathy Richardson Band’s album The Road to Bliss earned a nod for the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. In 2008 Richardson became the lead vocalist for Jefferson Starship, contributing heavily to their Jefferson’s Tree of Liberty release later that year.
