The Chippewas women’s gymnastics team first competed in the 1974-75 season, with Coach Fulp leading the team to a 13-4 season in their debut. Fulp led the team through the 1977-78 season, accruing a record of 35-23. Central Michigan began conference play in 1980-81 when Coach Piper led the team.

But the first conference championship for the team was when the team was led by Coach Reighard, who coached from 1985 to 2019. In 1990, the Chippewas had an overall record of 19-3-1, going 13-0 against MAC opponents and 5-0 in the postseason, winning the MAC Conference Championship for the first time. Reighard won 15 conference championships and amassed 587 wins in his tenure. He was named the NCAA Regional Coach of the Year in 2003.
