The Charlotte Independence is considered a second-tier team in the American soccer pyramid, competing in the USL Championship. The Independence play home games at the American Legion Memorial Stadium, which seats up to 8,500 people and is located near downtown Charlotte. In 2014, the Independence was formed after the Charlotte Eagles moved into the amateur Premier Development League and sold their rights.

The crest includes an image from when it was signed in 1775 and Captain James Jack, who delivered The Declaration on Independence to Philadelphia. Supporters were given the option of selecting one of twelve designs, all of which included the year and the captain. In memory of Jack, the team was nicknamed "The Jacks." On December 5, 2014, former Dallas Burn head coach Mike Jeffries took over the team. The team lost their opening match of 2015 USL season 3-2 at Transamerica Field on March 28th but was able to score their first-ever goal during the 13th minute.
