Smither took his first steps toward a professional music career when, in 1960, he and two friends entered a folk “Battle of the Bands” in New Orleans and won. By 1967, Smither had moved to Cambridge, MA, to be a part of the city’s burgeoning folk music scene, and was featured on the cover of The Broadside of Boston magazine.
