In the early ‘70s, he founded Irakere, which would achieve fame for their fusion of Afro-Cuban jazz and songo music. In 1980 the band’s self-titled album would win the Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording.

While playing with Irakere, Rodriguez also produced a slew of acclaimed solo work. To date, he has won four Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards as a solo artist.
