While studying at the University of Texas in El Paso in 2008, Greg Gonzalez took to recording ambient sounds in stairwells and trying to write barbed pop songs. The solo project morphed and grew over the years and Cigarettes After Sex came together as a band in 2012 with Phillip Tubbs on keyboards and guitar, Jacob Tomsky on drums and Randy Miller on bass backing up Gonzalez's dreamy, shoegaze-pop.

Their debut EP '/.' refined their dark, seductive, androgynous ballads and drew comparisons with The XX and Cocteau Twins, but received little critic attention at the time. It took a move to Brooklyn, New York to kickstart interest and three years later the EP and new single 'Affection' finally started picking up millions of views on YouTube. A cover of REO Speedwagon's 'Keep On Loving You' was another hazy slice of noir romanticism and their self-titled album in 2017 further cemented their reputation for slow, ambient, bittersweet pop and sultry, ethereal set-pieces, including the tracks 'John Wayne', 'Opera House', 'Apocalypse' and 'Each Time You Fall In Love'.
