Robitaille was born in 1981 in Lafontaine, Ontario, and began learning to play the piano when he was five. By the time he was a teenager he had learned violin, trumpet and guitar as well, and began writing his first songs at fifteen. Robitaille went on to study music at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he won the school’s Battle of the Bands competition.

In 2002, the artist released his debut album Damien, then won first prize in both the Granby Song Festival and Francouvertes Festival. Damien later won the Discovery of the Year Award at the Gala des Prix Trille Or, and the artist then released his album L'homme Qui Me Ressemble in 2006. The album received a Juno Award nomination for Best Album, as well as four separate ADISQ nominations. Robitaille’s successes continued, as his 2009 album, Homme Autonome earned the artist eight additional ADISQ nominations.
