Dante Elephante was born Ruben Zarate and developed his unique style despite growing up near Santa Barbara, Calif., an area known for surf-rock and indie-pop. Zarate grew up in the neighboring town of Goleta where he focused on the music of artists like John Lennon, Brian Wilson and The Pixies. In 2010, Zarate started Dante Elephante and began to play gigs around the college town of Isla Vista.

After performing solo for a while Zarate enlisted the help of Chris Lopez, Tommy Devoy and Kevin Boutin, local University of California, Santa Barbara students to join Dante Elephante. With a full crew behind him, Zarate and company released their debut EP German Aquatics in 2013. The group still had a surf-rock tinge though until working with producer Jonathan Rado helped Zarate reach deeper into his influences to produce their debut full-length LP Anglo-Saxon Summer in 2015.
