Paul Katz, who was also the group’s inaugural conductor, founded the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (DPYO) in 1937. The orchestra is the third oldest youth orchestra in the United States. Every season the orchestra performs three concerts. 

The Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra has been invited to perform at multiple Ohio Music Education Association conferences, with its first-year appearance being in 2002. The orchestra also regularly has performances as part of the Dayton Philharmonic DP&L Family Concert Series, which includes collaborations with acts from around the world such as the Zoot Theatre, Cirque de la Symphonie, the Dayton Ballet II Senior Company and the Magic Circle Mime Company.

The DPYO is supported by the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance in conjunction with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Association, and the Association of Parents and Friends of the Dayton Philharmonic. 

The DPYO has an affiliation with the Youth Division of the League of American Orchestras. Rehearsals are held every Sunday at L. Fritz Hall from 1:30 to 4:30 in the University of Dayton from September to May. Sample works the DPYO has done include the “Hebrides Overture” by Mendelssohn, Bryant’s “Dusk”, Malcolm Arnold’s “Four Scottish Dances” and Mass of the Children by Rutter.
