Matsuev was born in 1975 in Irkutsk and began learning piano at only three years old. At fifteen he won the city’s New Names competition, which provided him funds to study music in Moscow. Matsuev toured widely across the US and Europe along with other up-and-coming musicians discovered through the competition.
In the early 90s, Matsuev studied at the Moscow Conservatory, and as a young man won the grand prize in both Johannesburg’s International Piano Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Matsuev has since served as artistic director of France’s Annecy Classic Festival, Irkutsk’s Stars on Baikal Festival and Kyiv’s International Festival and Competition.
Matsuev has performed at the Winter Olympics, is a member of The Presidential Council for Culture and Arts and has won the Russian National Music Award for Best Instrumentalist in Classical Music four times in the mid-2010s.
