He went on to study concert and church organ performance at Indiana University’s School of Music where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
James found his passion for silent film performance in 1969, witnessing theatre organist Gaylord Carter perform alongside a screening of The Mask of Zorro. Soon after, he began performing them himself and by 1971 was performing alongside a full orchestra and from 1975 to 1989 served as resident organist for the Ohio Theater. He performed his organ concerto with the Chicago Symphony in 1984 at the Orchestra Hall and toured throughout the decade alongside silent film stars Lillian Gish and Charles “Buddy” Rogers.
