The groups' debut album, We’ll Build Them a Golden Bridge, dropped in 1996 featuring sixteen lo-fi home recordings and was praised for Bejar’s instinct for melodies. Destroyer began gaining more and more popularity throughout Vancouver in the early days and in 2000 released Thief, an album full of anthemic ballads and Bejar’s signature lyrical tone set over a full band on each track for the first time. The following year Bejar and the outfit had their first major critical success with Streethawk: A Seduction, which was met with a glowing review from the tastemaker music publication Pitchfork. The band released a number of albums from 2002 on Merge Records including 2011’s Kaputt, featuring some of their biggest songs “Kaputt” and “Chinatown”.
